Cataract Surgery

A cataract is the most common cause of vision loss in adults. In early stages of cataract development, one may experience glare, haloes, loss of contrast or colours. Cataract surgery is indicated when your decreased vision interferes with your ability to work, drive, or enjoy everyday activities.

Cataract surgery i an outpatient procedure performed in the operating room. Although you are awake during the surgery, a local anesthetic eye drop will be given to numb the eye, and a mild intravenous sedative may also be given to reduce anxiety. After the cataract is removed with a special ultrasound machine, a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens implant (IOL) will be placed into the eye to replace the function of your natural lens that was removed.

These steps include making the corneal incision, making the opening in the capsule containing the cataract, softening the cataract, and making customized incisions on the cornea to reduce astigmatism.
