Pterygium surgery is an outpatient procedure to remove a degenerative growth of the conjunctiva that has grown over the cornea surface. This condition is brought on by ultraviolet radiation exposure from the sun throughout one's lifetime. To reduce the risk of recurrence of the pterygium following surgery, a piece of the conjunctiva is cut out from the same eye, and patched over the site where the pterygium is removed.
Pterygium is a non-cancerous growth that starts in the white part of the eye called conjunctiva, which slowly grows over the cornea which is the clear part of the eye.
The exact cause is unknown, but is associated to the excessive exposure to sunlight, wind, and/or sand. Symptoms include persistent redness from smoke, inflammation, foreign body sensation, tearing, dry and itchy eyes. Advanced pterygium can affect vision as it invades the cornea causing astigmatism.
Pterygium removal is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes 10 to 20 minutes to perform. Sedation given via IV or by mouth may help you feel more relaxed during the procedure.
We aim to care for our patients compassionately in a technologically cutting edge environment using the latest advances in clinical research.
